Eugene Delacroix's sketch for 'Liberty Leading the People' breaks record

 

Eugene Delacroix’s famous work capturing the romance and bloodshed of the French Revolution of 1830, is a defining work for the artist. It hangs in the Louvre. 

 

A sketch for the final piece sold at Christie's on December 14th in their 19th Century European & Orientalist Art sale . It carried an estimate of £700,000-£1,000,000. The sketch sold for £2.6 million. This marks a new record price for the artist.

The auctioneers said no buyer details could be released at this stage.
