Leonardo Da Vinci painting breaks world auction record at $450m

Leonardo Da Vinci's Salvator Mundi, the painting of Jesus Christ commissioned by King Louis XII of France over 500 years ago, sold at Christie’s in New York today for $450.3m, including premium. This is the highest ever price for a piece of artwork at auction.

The bidding took over 20 minutes, pausing dramatically at $200 million before shooting up to the final hammer price of $400 million, rising in increments of as much as £30 million. It beat the previous 2012 record for Edvard Munch's The Scream, which sold for over $119 million.

Sold by Christie's in London by auctioneer Jussi Pylkkänen.

Pylkkänen said “It’s the zenith of my career as an auctioneer. There’ll never be another painting that I shall sell for more than this painting tonight.”
